To Beat The Heat, Practice Pranayam

One of the best things one could do for their emr is to practice yoga. However, did you know that yoga is one of the best ways to cool off? Its true, the most effective method comes from yoga, a very simple pranayam that cools your whole body from within, more effective than any air conditioner. Once I was in a large group, in a small room, in the worst of summer. The electricity failed leaving us boiling and miserable. We all did the breathing exercises given below and very soon everyone was comfortable enough to go back to work.

Once I was in a large group, in a small room, in the worst of summer. The electricity failed leaving us boiling and miserable. We all did the breathing exercises given below and very soon everyone was comfortable enough to go back to work.

“At first I thought of leaving,” said Sudha, a homemaker. “But after just a few minutes of the breathing I was so comfortable I did not feel the heat and actually forgot all about it.” Breath in through the mouth and out through the nose.

To breathe in open the lips as wide as you can, exposing the teeth and gums. Touch the teeth together. As you breath in air will go through your teeth, instantly cooled by your saliva. Then close your mouth and breathe out through the nose. If you are doing it right you will immediately feel the coolness go right down your body. It also strengthens weak teeth and gums.

This Pranayam is an even more effective cooling but may not be easy for everyone. If you cannot do it, never mind, do the Sheetkari instead. Once again you inhale through the mouth, exhale through the nose.

The difference is that you suck in air through the tongue as if through the straw. Roll your tongue so that it is like a straw, the tip protruding slightly out of your mouth. Close your lips around your tongue so that no air goes in except through your tongue. Breathe in deeply and feel the coolness travel all the way through your chest and stomach. Breathe out naturally through the nose.

When you do it properly you can feel the coolness as it goes right through your chest and down to your stomach. Cooling is immediate.

This pranayam is also very effective for acidity.

Normally we breathe through the nose which filters air and keeps unhealthy particles out. When you breathe through the mouth no such filtering happens, so make sure you do this breathing only in unpolluted places.

This is a fun way to cool down in the worst heat. Visualise yourself in a lovely cool place like walking in the snow, or a cool wind blowing. Visualise every detail of the place, making the visualisation as clear as possible. Focus on feeling the coolness of the wind or the snow.

Breathing normally, imagine that with every breath you are breathing in the chill of the air and it is filling you with coolness. In just a few minutes you should be relaxed and comfortable, and very cool no matter how hot the summer. Source
